Alternative Investments Fellowship Program (AIFP)

If you are an underrepresented young professional looking to land a job in Alternative Investments (AI), you’ve come to the right place. The AIFP offers a comprehensive educational and training opportunity specific to the AI industry.

Who We Serve

  • Professionals of color traditionally underrepresented in alternative investments (i.e. people of Black, Hispanic and Native American descent, as well as Asian women)
  • Investment banking analysts in the first or second year of an analyst program at a bulge bracket or boutique investment bank

Preferred analysts include those in traditional i-banking industry coverage groups, M&A, leverage finance and structured finance. Both SEO alumni and non-alumni are eligible to apply.

How It Works

Over the course of 10 months fellows receive training and mentoring to strengthen their investment banking analysts’ skills and prepare to compete for positions in private equity (PE) and other AI.

While working as investment banking analysts, Fellows receive in-depth exposure and hands-on development during intensive mock interviews, case studies, Saturday workshops, and 3-4 early weekday breakfast seminars per month. Analysts continue to work full-time in their current position during this period. Program activities are based in NYC and include mock interviews, case studies, weekend workshops, and weekday breakfast seminars to avoid work conflicts.

Program Components

  • Advanced LBO Modeling Training Sessions
  • LBO Case Study Practice & Review
  • Breakfast seminars with industry leaders, including:
    • Limited Partners discussion on investing in the alternatives sector
    • Roundtable discussions with senior partners at PE firms
    • “A Day in the Life of a PE Associate”
  • Mentoring by PE professionals from our prestigious partners
  • Introduction to the unique cultures of each partner firm
  • Participation in the SEO Annual Alternative Investments Conference

“Being able to interact with senior PE professionals undoubtedly made us more prepared for the process as we were getting one-on-one coaching from the people who would ultimately be making the decisions.”

  • What is the purpose of the Fellowship?

The Fellowship educates participants on various aspects of alternative investments and strengthens them to compete for positions in this highly competitive industry at the end of their two-year analyst programs. The program also sharpens Fellows’ relevant skills for their current analyst roles.

  • What is the application/interview timeline?

Check out the full timeline and dates here.

  • When and where are Fellowship activities held?

Fellows participate in Saturday workshops and 3-4 early weekday breakfast seminars per month. Events are scheduled outside of work hours to not disrupt work obligations or the work day. Fellows must be based in New York, where all programming takes place.

  • Is it a paid Fellowship?

No, Fellows will not be paid. The Fellowship is an educational program designed to complement the learning that occurs while individuals are employed as full-time analysts.

  • Is there an application fee?

There is no fee to apply or become a Fellow.

  • Will Fellows be given job offers?

The Fellowship is purely an educational program. Although the program is designed to better position participants to work in the AI sector within a stand-alone firm or an investment bank after their analyst programs, SEO cannot promise or guarantee employment.

  • Will SEO accept an online printout or pdf Score Report from the College Board?

Yes. The turnaround time for College Board Score Reports is 4-6 weeks for some applicants. Please be sure to request SAT scores and transcripts sufficiently in advance to ensure delivery to SEO by the time of your interview.

  • What if my official transcript or official Score Report will not arrive until after the application deadline?

You can still submit an online application. However, these documents must be submitted on or before the day of your in-person interview for your application to be considered complete and your candidacy to remain viable. You may send them to:

    SEO, Attn: Alternative Investments,

    55 Exchange Place, Suite 601,

    New York, NY 10005

    or altinvest@seo-usa.org.

  • Do you need “official” or “unofficial” transcripts and Score Reports?

Both are acceptable and can be uploaded into the application, but both official transcripts and official score reports must be delivered by your first interview.

  • What is SEO’s organizational code for scores sent through the College Board?

    SEO’s code is 8798.

  • I only took the ACT, not the SAT. Will ACT scores be accepted in lieu of SAT scores for Fellowship consideration?

Yes, SEO will consider applicants with only an ACT score.
